Project Earth Garden, the successful effort of Montgomery County Master Gardener volunteers, is a splendid example of local herbs, flowers, vegetables, and turf. Taking a stroll through this well-tended third of an acre, located behind the activity center at the Agricultural History Farm Park, is certainly recommended. A bench serves as a focal point amidst the shade garden, which beckons the visitor to sit and relax amidst the naturlistic setting.

A small man-made pond is nestled within the butterfly garden, while a "living teepee" reaches skyward within the childrens' garden. Narrow raised beds, nurtured by a group of autistic children and their mentors demonstrates a comittment to Horticulural Therapy as well. It is also remarkable that although surrounded by 410 acres of land teeming with deer that this garden continues to thrive undisturbed. The master gardeners employ Integrated Pest Management (IPM) principles to sucessfully maintain a productive balance within the garden.

The Earth Garden, born in 1994, is open to the public and is best visited in the spring and summer seasons. Those interested in becoming a master gardener should call
(301) 590-2842 before 1pm or visit their website.
