Cabin
Located
on Brookeville Road between Grayheaven Manor and Georgia Avenue
(1/2 mile west of Georgia Avenue)
Brookeville, MD 20833.
President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation did not free
all the slaves...
Montgomery County's Oakley Cabin, which served as a home to
both slaves and free blacks, is the setting for the annual
celebration of the emancipation of the slaves. The emancipation
of the slaves took place in Maryland upon the adoption of
the 1864 state constitution. The Mason-Dixon Line, which separates
Maryland from Pennsylvania, was the "line of freedom" for
many escaping slaves. Quakers and free Blacks helped many
of these fugitives in their flight in Montgomery County.
Among
the events that can be enjoyed at this historical location
are the annual Montgomery County History Days (in July) and
Maryland State Emancipation Day (in November). For more information
on these and other Oakley Cabin events be sure to check out
the Maryland
Park Foundation's Oakley Cabin webpage.
Parking for the Oakley Cabin events is available at the Longwood
Recreation Center, located at 19300 Georgia Avenue between
Olney and Brookeville. Shuttle buses will take visitors to
Oakley Cabin, from the parking area. Donations are suggested.
